The research behind the numbers
- Federal: 2026 tax year (returns filed in 2027), per IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which made the 10% to 37% brackets permanent. Standard deduction $16,100 single, $32,200 joint.
- States: all 50 states and Washington, DC, from the Tax Foundation’s 2026 State Individual Income Tax Rates and Brackets (published February 2026): every bracket, standard deduction, exemption and credit, plus the phase-outs for Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and others. California uses the Franchise Tax Board’s 2025 amounts (the latest official table), with its 1% surcharge over $1 million built into the top bracket.
- Payroll taxes: Social Security 6.2% on wages up to $184,500, Medicare 1.45% on everything, plus 0.9% extra Medicare above $200,000 single or $250,000 joint. State payroll programs included: California disability insurance 1.3%, Washington WA Cares 0.58%, Massachusetts paid family leave 0.46%. Other states’ small disability or family-leave payroll taxes are not included.
- Assumptions: all income is wages from one job, takes the standard deduction, no kids, no credits, no retirement contributions. Married couples are one household with the total income shown. Local income taxes (about ten states have them) are off unless you tick the box, which adds each state’s average local rate. Real bills vary, so treat this as a clear picture, not tax advice.
- Not included: sales tax, property tax, gas tax and the employer’s share of payroll tax.
